Memorial Day 2021 - Chica

Hello there!

Today is Memorial Day - the day scores of Americans remember the fallen by dressing in primary colors, shooting off colorful rockets, and fattening ourselves like prized cows. Really though, this is the day that we in America honor those brave soldiers who laid down their lives in service of God and country.

Kiddo and I celebrated the day with a quiet barbeque at our parents’ home. Per tradition, we carbed up on burgers, hotdogs, baked beans, potato salad, and chips. Then we treated ourselves with yummy ice cream and much needed naps. We also watched a movie themed for the day: “We Were Soldiers”. This is a favorite of our brother, who recently finished an enlistment in the Marine Corps, but this was my first viewing of the film.

While watching the movie (in hindsight, I should’ve done it after) I researched the story behind it. It was an emotional film with a surprisingly great soundtrack and gifted cast. Mel Gibson stars as Col. Hal Moore who was a remarkable soldier who led his men through the first major battle between the forces of the U.S. military and the Vietnamese in the Vietnamese War. As the film was adapted from a book written by the real Hal Moore and fellow survivor, a military journalist, Joe Galloway, it was a mostly historically accurate depiction of the war and did a good job of showing the true effects of the war on those men and their families.

At the end of the day, we owe our lives as we know them to the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives and limbs to defend our way of life here in the United States. Kiddo and I would like to thank every serviceman (active, retired, and fallen) for fighting for our freedom and our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Thank you all so much.
